The British Government has made new appeals to the Arab states for an extension of the Palestine truce and therefore “cannot accept the view that the truce has irretrievably broken down,” a Foreign Office spokesman said today.

He noted reports that U.N. Palestine mediator Count Folke Bernadotte has flown to Amman to confer with King Abdullah which, he said, may be linked to a report that the Transjordan king will make a last-minute effort to change the view of the other Arab states on the prolongation of the truce.

The Foreign Office representative said Britain will therefore not make any new decisions now on supplying arms to the Middle East nor on the question of releasing Jewish detainees of military age on Cyprus. The spokesman said that the government’s present policies will continue until such time as it is firmly convinced the truce is definitely void.
