A British military court today sentenced two Jewish youths to life imprisonment following their conviction yesterday on charges of having served as guards for two British constables kidnapped by the Irgun last June.
The Jews, Joseph Gabriel and Abraham Katalan, were convicted on evidence based a fingerprints found on various objects in the room in which the policemen were held prisoners. The defense attorney asked that the prisoners be given special treatment in jail as political prisoners, asserting that they had “given the abducted constables special treatment,” but the court rejected the plea.
The Stern Group tonight issued a leaflet stating that “our hand will reach (Capt. Roy) Farran even to the ends of the earth.” (From London it was yesterday repeated that Farran, who was cleared by a British military court in Jerusalem last month of charges of murdering a Jewish youth, had arrived at Liverpool.)
Fourteen Arabs were today arraigned before the Jerusalem district commissioner charged with committing “murderous acts and engaging in armed attacks.” They have than identified by Arab sources as members of an Arab underground organization known as “Freedom.”
The situation on Palestine’s northern frontier remains quiet and no new troop ##ements have been reported. Even those Syrian troops which earlier this week were ### on maneuvers have withdrawn. However, Jewish security forces continue to maintain careful watch on the border.
