The divisional court granted a certificate today to Colin Jordan, leader of the small but violently anti-Semitic British National Socialist movement, giving him the right to ask the House of Lords for permission to appeal his conviction and two-month jail sentence for using defamatory language.
The charges grew out of a viciously anti-Semitic address Jordan delivered at a rally of his movement in London’s Trafalgar Square last July. The London Appeals Court quashed the conviction. The charges were restored by the divisional court on March 19 when the police department appealed the dismissal.
The three judges of the divisional court, in granting the certificate, stated that they were doing so because the case involved a point of law of general public importance.
