British Jews won an 18-month battle to gain government assurances protecting the community’s right to practice ritual slaughter. The future of such slaughter, or shechitah, in Britain had been threatened following a June 2003 report from the Farm Animal Welfare Council recommending the government repeal the right of the Jewish community to carry out kosher slaughter.
