John Walter Nicholls, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, has been appointed Ambassador to Israel, to succeed Sir Francis Evans who has been Great Britain’s envoy there since 1951. He takes up his duties in Israel next month.

Mr. Nicholls has been in the Foreign Service since 1932. During the was, he headed a section in the Ministry of Economic Warfare. Later he headed the Foreign Office department of German commercial relations, was a member of the Control Commission in Austria and, in 1949, served for a time as charge d’affaires in the British Embassy at Moscow. He has also held diplomatic posts in Athens and Lisbon.
