Regular bus transportation throughout Israel was paralyzed today when the transport cooperative companies halted their vehicles in protest against a government refusal of their demand to increase fares by approximately 20 per cents. A compromise formula proposed by the Israel Federation of Labor was turned down by the cooperatives and all scheduled bus transport ground to a half.
The Ministry of Communication tried its best to arrange emergency transportation. Passenger train loadings were doubled, trucks and taxicabs were pressed into service, and all private owners of motor transport of any kind were asked to pick up workers. Meanwhile, however, interurban transportation seemed to have broken down entirely, while no buses at all were to be seen on city streets.
