Jewish communal leaders from all parts of the United States and Canada began arriving here today to participate in the sessions of the 29th General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, which will open here Thursday. More than 1,000 delegates will attend the Assembly, it was announced by Irving Kane, CJFWF president.
The Assembly will evaluate major developments in American Jewish communal life, and will also hear a major address by Israel Ambassador Avraham Harman who will analyze the current situation in Israel and the developments there which relate especially to the responsibility of Jewish federations and welfare funds.
The delegates will also discuss the reorganization of American philanthropic aid to Israel; the basic economic and social changes on the American scene which require special attention by Jewish federations; and the results of the 1960 fund-raising campaigns, as well as the prospects for 1961. Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman, executive vice-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, and Isidore Sobeloff, executive vice-president of the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation, will analyze the 1960 campaigns and appraise the outlook for campaigning in 1961.
There will also be a re-examination of Jewish agencies and Jewish responsibilities. Reflecting the delegates’ interest in the directions which American Jewry and Jewish community organizations will probably take during the next decade, Mr. Kane will address one of the principal sessions on key issues confronting communities, locally and nationally, and principles to guide future action.
