The Canadian Government has agreed to admit 500 Jewish children from France whose parents have been deported to Nazi-held territories, it was learned here today. Jewish relief organizations here were also notified by the Government that an additional 500 children may be admitted when it is ascertained that the additional group can be properly placed and cared for.
The United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies throughout Canada will be responsible for the reception, placement and care of the children. Mr. Saul Hayes, national director of the organization, left for New York to negotiate with the Joint Distribution Committee for assistance in covering the transportation costs involved in bringing the children from France to Canada.
It is understood that the arrangement does not include children over 18 years of age. The admission of the children will not constitute a basis for the admission of their parents into Canada at a later date. The children will be admitted under non-immigrant status for the duration of the war.
