The Canadian Government was asked today to speak out in favor of admitting 100,000 Jews to Palestine at a hearing conducted here by the External Affairs Committee of Parliament.
Samuel J. Zacks, president of the United Zionist Council of Canada, presented a brief to the committee outlining the Zionist position on Palestine and urged it to recommend that the government issue a statement supporting Jewish immigration.
Herbert Mowat, secretary of the Canadian Palestine Committee, submitted a brief which presented the stand of Canadian Christians on the Palestine issue. Louis Gerber, vice-president of the Zionist Organization of Canada, also spoke.
Following submission of the memoranda, the members of the committee, who displayed a lively interest in the subject, queried the Zionist spokesmen on the U.S. position on Palestine, the absorptive capacity of the country and the relations between Jews and Arabs there.
Replying, Mr. Zacks referred the questioners to President Truman’s statement on the immigration of 100,000 Jews, to Dr. Walter C. Lowdermilk’s volume on Palestine and to a recent series on Jewish-Arab relations in Palestine by I.F. Stone of the New York newspaper PM.
A three-man Arab delegation attended the hearings, but did not speak. It was announced that the Arabs will be heard at a later session.
