An appeal to the Government of West Germany to amend its restitution laws, so as to permit compensation to Jewish survivors of Nazi persecutions who had not beenable to file payment applications prior to 1953, was presented here today to Dr. Kurt Oppler, Bonn’s Ambassador, by the Canadian Jewish Congress.
Michael Garber, president of the CJC, pointed out to Dr. Oppler that there are, in Canada, many potential compensation applicants who could not escape from Iron Curtain countries prior to the German cut-off date of October 1, 1953. “Their bitterness is great and understandable.” said Mr. Garber. Dr. Oppler said he would forward the appeal immediately to the Foreign Ministry in Bonn, Legislation aimed to amend the German restitution law to help post-1953 applicants is pending in Germany’s Parliament.
