A delegation representing 375 organizations in the Province of Ontario, authorized to speak for the 105,000 Jews in this province, met here today with Werner Oppel, West German Consul-General in Toronto, to protest the Bonn Government’s plans to put into effect the statute of limitations on the prosecution of Nazi war criminals and to cancel arms shipments to Israel.
About 150 Jews marched silently from the headquarters of the YMHA here to the German Consulate-General, bearing placards voicing their protests. A resolution concerning the subjects was presented to Consul-General Werner Oppel by Gurston Allen and Myer Sharzer, representing the Canadian Jewish Congress, which led the action.
The resolution statedthat the Bonn Government “apparently intends to yield to pressure by Egypt,” and declared that such surrender to Egyptian pressure “will be interpreted as a sign of moral weakness.” Mr. Oppel, who had been imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp for a year because his wife is Jewish, told the delegation leaders; “I see your point of view; I understand your feelings.”
