Carlos L. Israels, a leader in Jewish philanthropic work for 25 years, has been elected president of United Hias Service, it was announced today. He fills the post left vacant June 10, 1957 through the death of Abner Bregman. In the interim, Murray I. Gurfein, prominent New York attorney and a past president of United Hias, acted as head of the global migration agency. He will continue as chairman of the agency’s executive committee for the coming year.
A member of numerous civic, professional, and philanthropic organizations, Mr. Israels is a “founder” and director of the New York UJA; a member of the National Council of JDC; and a director and assistant treasurer of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. Mr. Israels was graduated from Columbia Law School where he was editor of the Columbia Law Review in 1928. He is a member of the New York law firm of Berlack, Israels and Liberman.
Sol Satinsky, a president of the Allied Jewish Appeal of Philadelphia, was elected a vice president of United Hias. Others, re-elected, include: vice presidents: Solomon Dingol, Adrian M. Easton, Louis Gallack. Herbert C. Kranzer, Hugo E. Rogers, William Rosenwald, Saul Seidman; treasurer: Max Ornstein. James P. Rice was reelected director.
