The American Friends of Tel Aviv University (AFTAU), which last year cancelled a major dinner to enable the Israel Bond Organization to conduct an emergency rally upon the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, will hold an Inaugural Aleph Tav Dinner at the Beverly Hilton here Sept. 14. it was announced by Victor M. Carter. AFTAU president and chairman of the university’s international Board of Governors.
The first recipient of the newly established award is Edward Sanders who is president of the Jewish Federation-Council of Greater Los Angeles and a leading figure in virtually all major Jewish causes here and abroad.
Carter said that Sanders will be cited as an individual who “exemplifies the qualities of integrity, vision and compassion” in his “personal endeavors to promote universal freedom, to nurture academic development and to champion the cause of Israel.” Sanders was designated for the ward, which carries the initials of the Tel Aviv University and represents the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet, by a special selection panel of prominent Los Angeles leaders. The choice was endorsed unanimously by the executive committee of the TAU’s Board of Governors.
Carter also announced that Simcha Dinitz, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.S., will be among the dignitaries who will pay tribute to Sanders at the award dinner. Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D.Wash.) will be guest speaker at the event. Dinitz will bring “the warmest possible greetings” from the Israeli government. Carter said, “which recognizes Ed Sanders as one of the Jewish State’s most ardent supporters.” Prof. Yuval Neeman is president of Tel Aviv University. Carter is a member of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s Board of Directors.
