The National Conference of Catholic Bishops has appealed to all Christians and Jews and “all men of good will” as well as Catholics to join together to combat racial discrimination and poverty.
The appeal was contained in a pastoral statement adopted unanimously by the nation’s Catholic prelates, which specifically endorsed open housing with equal opportunities for all regardless of race, creed or color. The statement also asked that “reasonable dialogue” replace “slogans” in racial tension developments in the United States.
The prelates reaffirmed past statements of the National Conference, as well as of the Ecumenical Council last year, that discrimination based on religion, race, language or national origins was contrary to Christian teachings.
