A deputation of Catholic women voiced objection to the official return of Marranos in Portugal to the faith of their forefathers, when they presented to the governor of Braganza a memorandum asking him to prohibit the contemplated official formation of a Jewish community by the Marranos of Braganza.
The Catholic women based their objection on the contention that the Marranos returning to Judaism are Freemasons. The governor rejected the demand, declaring that the Jewish religion must be respected as are other religions.
The Marrano community in Braganza is constantly growing in numbers. Services are openly held every Saturday. The Marranos in Mirandadodouvo have also decided to officially return to Judaism.
