Chabad-Lubavitch opened an outreach house in the Mexican resort town of Cancun.
Rabbi Mendel Druk and his wife, Rachel, said they opened the Chabad house for the 200 or so Jews living in Cancun, as well as the thousands of Jewish tourists who visit yearly. Druk will host Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services at a Cancun hotel.
The house is sponsored by Sami Rohr, who has paid to establish and maintain hundreds of Chabad houses around the world.
“We’re very excited,” the president of Cancun’s Jewish community, Samuel Rovero, said in a press release distributed by Chabad. “We truly believe that it is better for the community to have a spiritual and religious authority.”
The Druks also set up a Web site, www.jewishcancun.com.
