Five leaders of a Muslim charity were convicted in a retrial of financing terrorism.
The leaders of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, based in a suburb of Dallas, were convicted Monday in U.S. District Court in Dallas on 108 criminal counts including support of terrorism, money laundering and tax fraud. No sentencing date was set, but the officials face lengthy prison terms, perhaps up to life behind bars.
Holy Land was accused of transferring millions of dollars to Hamas, which was declared a terrorist group by the United States government in 1995. The foundation argued it was providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
The previous trial in Dallas District Court ended in a mistrial in October 2007. The foundation said it will appeal Monday’s verdict.
