Preparations were completed here today for the unveiling and dedication of a monument aiming “to illustrate the historical fact that peoples of all races and creeds participated in the upbuilding of America from the beginning of the nation.” The monument will be unveiled on Dec. 15 marking the 150 anniversary of the ratification of the American Bill of Rights and the first day of Chanukah.
Motivated by the desire to strengthen the traditional spirit of American unity, the monument shows George Washington standing between and clasping the hands of Haym Salomon and Robert Morris, the two men whose services were so vital in getting desperately needed finances and supplies for George Washington’s armies of liberty. The monument, formed after the model of Lorado Taft, Chicago’s world famous sculptor, was erected by the Patriotic Foundation of Chicago, in which all faiths are represented.
The base of the monument will carry a quotation from George Washington carved in the granite, reading: “The Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.”
