The International Network of Jewish Holocaust Survivors today condemned the recent rise of anti-Semitism in Poland and called on all “freedom-conscious elements within Poland to fight the neo-fascist resurgence of anti-Semitism in the land of Auschwitz, Treblinka and Maidanek.”
Menachem Rosensaft, chairman of the Network, said signs of a rise in anti-Semitism in Poland include the reported arrest of Marek Edelman, one of the last surviving leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising; anti-Jewish propaganda on radio and television (see Dec. 21 Bulletin, page 4); and reports that Jews were being turned away from bread lines.
Rosensaft, the son of Polish Jews, recalled that Polish anti-Semitism was not a new phenomenon. “Forty years ago,” he said, “the Polish people watched in silence as our grandparents were murdered and our parents persecuted. Today, apparently the few remaining Jews in Poland are once again being victimized.”
The International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors was formed at the World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust survivors in Jerusalem last June. Since its formal establishment September 13, more than 25 organizations of children of Holocaust survivors throughout the United States and Canada, as well as groups in France and Israel, have affiliated with the Network, Rosensaft said.
