With Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and may other notables in attendance, a new auditorium, named after Winston Churchill, was dedicated here this week-end on the new, Mt. Carmel campus of Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology.
Among participants in the ceremony were Miss Sarah Churchill, daughter of Sir Winston, who read a letter from her distinguished father. Present also was Dr. Hans Albert Einstein, son of the late Prof. Albert Einstein.
In the letter he had sent through his daughter, Sir Winston declared: “I have been a Zionist for many years, and I view with pleasure and admiration the maturing of the State of Israel. ” The British elder statesman added that he considers the increase of Israel’s technical aptitude not only “commendable! but also “perhaps the most urgent requirement.”
Mr. Ben Gurion, replying to Sir Winston’s letter, referred to Britain’s wartime Prime Minister as the greatest fighter for freedom in our generation. ” Expressing pride in the fact that Sir Winston permitted his name to be used for the new auditorium, Mr. Ben Gurion said: “This may be a recognition, by the greatest statesman of our day, that Israel’s people, too, are endowed with some share of the courage, foresight and wisdom that inspired the great British leader. “
Dr. Einstein, who was the principal guest of honor at the dedication of another of Technion’s four new buildings, the Albert Einstein Institute of Physics, expressed the hope that the Institute bearing his father’s name would become a center for technological progress for the entire Middle East and for other underdeveloped areas throughout the world.
Technion’s board of governors held its annual meeting here last night, and adopted a budget of 9, 000, 000 Israeli pounds ($4, 950, 000).
