City in Western Canada Elects Its First Jewish Mayor

For the first time in the history of this city–in fact the first time in any city in Western Canada–a Jew has been elected mayor.

The new mayor of Medicine Hat is Harry Weiner, well known local farmer and businessman and an active leader in Jewish communal activities. The Jewish community of this city consists of some 40 families and maintains one synagogue.
