The Soviet Government is now trying to understand why world Jewry is dissatisfied with the treatment of Jews in the Soviet Union, Dr. Nahum Goldmann told a press conference here today. He pointed out that while Jews in Russia have equal rights, the Jewish problem in the Soviet Union has not been solved as “a collective problem.” This fact, he stated, must be stressed publicly.

Touching upon the latest changes in the Soviet Government, Dr. Goldmann said it cannot yet be estimated whether these charges will bring “liberalization” with regard to the Jewish question. He stated that in the past five years there was some slight indication of possible “progress” in connection with permitting Jewish emigration from Russia, inasmuch as Soviet representatives are now at least ready “to listen to our ideas and even ask questions.”

Dr. Goldmann also spoke on the possibilities of Arab-Israel peace which, he said, is still far off. At the same time, he emphasized that an increasing number of Arab leaders are coming to the conclusion that their hope to destroy Israel is unrealistic. He also answered questions concerning the settlement of the Arab refugee problem.
