Colonial Minister Capt. Oliver Stanley today assured a delegation of Agudas Israel leaders that the British Government saw no objections to extension of the scheme under which 4,000 Jewish children and 500 adult guardians will soon leave Bulgaria for Palestine, to other Nazi-held countries, Slovakia in particular. He emphasized, however, that the entire problem was “bristling with difficulties” and was constantly being studied by the Government departments concerned. Capt. Stanley also agreed that it might be feasible to include rabbis, doctors and communal leaders in future contingents of emigrants from Axis countries.
The London Spectator, influential liberal weekly, today urged the appointment of “a man of vigor and determination” as High Commissioner for Jewish Affairs to formulate a policy of aiding the Jews in occupied countries and to carry out its execution. It charges that the failure to take any decisive action to help the Jews is due to the fact that it is not the problem of any one responsible official. The Spectator also proposes a temporary increase in the Palestine immigration quota and suggests that haven for the refugees might be found in the more habitable sections of Libya and French North Africa.
