Communism is the world’s Public Enemy No. 1, Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein warned yesterday in his Sunday afternoon sermon at the Institutional Synagogue, 148 West Eighty-fifth street. It is contrary to the philosophy of the Jew, he declared, and it is our greatest enemy because it preaches the destruction of religion.

Calling upon Jewish youth to remain solidly within the ranks of Israel and to combat Communism, Rabbi Goldstein pointed out that the Jewish religion preaches a divine arbitration between capitalism and Communism through the system of the jubilee, which provides for the redistribution of all landed wealth, so that not more than one full generation can pass without the State becoming a commonwealth.

ROBERT NATHAN TALKS AT RODEPH SHOLOM

Robert Nathan, novelist, speaking Sunday morning at Temple Rodeph Sholem, 7 West Eighty-third street, took up the question of how Jews should combat their enemies.

First, Mr. Nathan declared, the Jews ought to look well into their own hearts to find that weakness within themselves wich is all too worthy of being disliked. At the same time, however, they should look no less earnesty at their virtues.

“Set your heart on what is best among you—on love, on kindness, on courage, on understanding—those are the virtues for a Jew to take pride in,” Mr. Nathan urged.

SEES ORTHODOXY FOUNDED ON LOGIC

Asserting that orthodoxy has been misinterpreted, Rabbi William Margolis, speaking at the Congregation Ohab Zedek, 118 West Ninety-fifth street, said:

“To be an orthodox Jew does not mean being a dogmatic doctrinaire. This faith of ours shapes and adapts itself to every mode of modern existence, as waters fit themselves to a varied shore. Some of our customs may seem a bit bizarre, but they are founded upon good and substantial reasons, upon logic and not narrow minded irrational belief. Superstition has no place in the Jewish code.”

SCORES THE SUPERSTITIOUS AS ‘UNCIVILIZED’

Superstitious people were termed unintelligent and uncivilized yesterday by Dr. Israel Goldstein, in a sermon delivered before Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, 257 West Eighty-eighth street.

“No person can be called truly civilized who harbors superstitious fear in his heart,” Dr. Goldstein said. “The fear of the ‘evil eye,’ the number thirteen, the breaking of a mirror, the appearance of a black cat, still maintain a hold even on people who claim to be intelligent,” Rabbi Goldstein complained.

SHUN ‘HEADLINE COMPLEX,’ ZEITLIN ADVISES

“Disregard sensationalism in the news,” was the advice given yesterday by Rabbi Joseph Zeitlin in his sermon at the Temple Ansche Chesed, West End avenue at 100th street.

“Because we constantly give so much attention to the criminal and his crimes, it seems that this publicity encourages the weak-minded and those who are ethically perverted to seek the so-called admiration of the newspaper reader. We must get away from the headline complex and learn to read papers that really give us news and not records of criminality.” Rabbi Zeit## asserted.
