The government has lately made ostentations declarations of friendship to the Jews, as have Prime Minister Valdemaras and Lithuanian representatives abroad, especially in the United States, who have made fiattering remarks about Lithuanian Jewry, writes the “Yiddishe Stimme,” Yiddish daily, in an editorial.
However, the paper declares, these fine words are not paralleled by deeds. Jewish trades and Jewish artisans are still subjected to economic ruin because of the compulsory Sunday rest law. They are still barred from government positions. Two Jewish doctors were recently dismissed from state positions, the few Jews holding state positions are soon compelled to leave. The paper adds that this list of complaints against the government could be continued.
A conference of Jewish merchants held at Shavle, decided to ask the government to postpone the date of collecting taxes, because of the difficult situation in the trades. The Jewish merchants declared that they face complete ruin.
