Concern that the partial Israel withdrawal in Lebanon will cause Lebanon’s de facto partition has been voiced by the British government. A statement issued by the Foreign Office says that if the Israeli decision to make a partial withdrawal is intended as a first stage in a complete withdrawal it would be welcomed by Britain. But if it amounted to a de facto partition of Lebanon, then it would undermine the stability of the region and should be avoided at all costs.
