A special meeting of the Southern California Conference of Religious Liberals was called recently for the purpose of discussing the Lankford Sunday Closing Law now being proposed before Congress and which if carried will make it prohibitive to work in the District of Columbia on Sundays.
The conference, which is composed of members of many Jewish, Unitarian and Universalist churches in Southern California, is opposed to the spirit of the law which if carried at the national capital would be an opening wedge on the part of religious fanatics leading to similar legislation in the future, a statement issued following the meeting declared.
A committee was appointed consisting of Rev. E. Burdette Backus of the First Unitarian Church. Rev. Shepherd of the First Universalist Church and Rabbi Isaacson of Temple Israel, Hollywood, to draw up resolutions of protest and to work out a practical method of opposing the passing of the bill, Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin, president of the Conference, called the meeting.
