The State of Israel must now be more watchful of its security than ever, in the light of the recent assassination of the Jordanian Prime Minister by Egyptian agents, Binyamin Eliav, Consul-General of Israel in New York, declared at the opening session of the annual board of directors conference of Farband-Labor Zionist Order.
“The bomb in Amman,” he stated, “provides ample proof that the dangers confronting Israel and the other independent nations of the Middle East continue unabated.” Mr. Eliav emphasized that the assassination should jolt those interested in peace in this critical area of the world out of their complacency. The Jews of the world, in particular, he continued, must free themselves of the illusion that all is peaceful and stable on Isreal’s borders.
Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the American Zionist Council, addressing the conference, said that American Zionism must set as its goal the “Zionization” of American Jewish life. Only in this way, he stressed, can the spiritual content of American Judaism be deepened and truly meaningful ties established between American Jewry and the State of Israel. “This process may take many years,” Rabbi Miller said, “but it must be begun immediately.”
Louis Segal, general secretary of the Farband, presented a detailed report of the growth of the organization since its last national convention which was held in May 1959 and of the Fnrband’s achievements, during this period in behalf of the American Jewish community and the State of Israel.
