The Association of American and Canadian settlers in Israel urged the Government of Israel today to provide more favorable conditions for settlement by American and Canadian Jews.
The request was embodied in a number of resolutions approved at the closing session of the Association’s annual convention. One resolution urged the Israel Treasury to waive income taxes on dollar payments for social security and other pensions to such settlers.
The delegates, representing some 8,000 Americans and Canadians living in Israel, expressed “disfavor” about the recent boost in travel taxes and also stressed the importance of building of rental apartments and establishment of more hostels for American newcomers.
Abba Eban, former Israel Ambassador to the United States and now Israel Minister Without Portfolio, told an earlier session that despite their small numbers, American and Canadian settlers had contributed substantially to Israel. He said “quality” made up for their small numbers.
Jacob Quat, registrar of the Haifa Technion, was elected president of the Association. Murray Greenfeld was chosen executive director.
