The cornerstone was laid here today for an eleven-story, $3,100,000 addition to the 92nd Street Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Association. Mayor John Lindsay joined in the formal ceremony which included placement of a “time capsule” in the cornerstone for the new Henry Kaufman building, which will occupy an entire block along with the older building. The area was re-named “Y Square” for the week starting today as part of the ceremony.
Mayor Lindsay also took part in some of the variety of activities marking the occasion. These included dancing on the street with senior citizen members of the Y. including a performance of the Hora, strolling musicians, a gymnast display and other activities illustrating the range of activities offered at the 92nd Street Y. The new building, which is scheduled to be opened in October, will include a Clara de Hirsch residence hall for girls, clubrooms, nursery, an art school, a music school, meeting and reception rooms and a recreation lounge on each floor.
