A challenge to the constitutionality of a decision by the board of education of Rutherford, New Jersey, to permit the distribution of the King James version of the Bible in the in the public schools of that town was scheduled to be heard today in the Superior Court of New Jersey, at Hackensack.
The question was raised by a Jewish parent, Bernard Tudor, and a Catholic parent, Mrs. Walter Natniak, both of Rutherford, after the school authorities granted permission to the Gideon Society to distribute copies of the New Testament to school children. Attorneys for the plaintiff include Leo Pfeffer, assistant general counsel to the American Jewish Congress, and Philip Baum of the Congress’ legal staff.
