Elimination of racial and religious hatreds and the promotion of international good will in the cause of world peace is the purpose of a million dollar foundation established by Raphael Herman of this city, a non-Jew. The endowment will be known as the Raphael Herman Foundation, Inc. Incorporation papers have already been filed at Albany.
One million dollars will be available for the Foundation’s work, after Mr. Herman’s decease, according to the announcement of Carlton E. Ladd of this city, who drew the charter for the Foundation.
The work of the Foundation is to be confined chiefly to the United States and will have its headquarters in New York City.
The incorporators of the Foundation include: Augustus O. Thomas, Augusta. Mc.; Milton A. McRae, San Diego, Cal; Carlton F. Ladd and Walter M. Ladd, Buffalo; Arthur Lucking and William Lucking, Detroit; Rufus B. Vonkleinsmid, Los Angeles; William G. McAdoo, Los Angeles; Frank A. Vanderlip, Scarboro, N. Y.
Since his retirement from business some years ago, Mr. Herman has been interested in the promotion of good will and better understanding. Several years ago he offered a prize of $25,000 through the World’s Federation of Education Associations for the best plan to promote world peace through education. The winner of the prize was David Starr Jordan.
