Czech President Vaclav Havel promised former U.S. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger that Czech archives would remain open to an international commission probing Holocaust-era insurance claims. Eagleburger, who visited Prague last week in his capacity as the commission’s chairman, praised the Czech Republic for establishing a government panel to deal with outstanding Holocaust-era issues. The commission, which was created last year, is investigating allegations that European insurers refused to pay claims filed by the heirs of Holocaust victims.
