Dayan Announces Four-year Halt on New Farm Settlements

Minister of Agriculture Moshe Dayan told the Parliamentary Economic Committee today that no new agricultural settlements would be established in Israel during the next four years except where security considerations prevailed or where settlement could be effected without having to bring in water from other sources.

The cabinet officer cited two areas where this ban would not apply–the Arava Valley in the southeast Negev and the Eingedi area near the Dead Sea. Emphasis of the agricultural program. Mr. Dayan said, would be on the consolidation of existing settlements.
