The Rev. W.R. Inge, former Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral, said today: “I will mention no names, but I am informed by a Parliamentarian of great pressure against Parliamentarians to oppose a policy of conciliation with Germany.”
The “gloomy dean” made the statement to the London News-Chronicle when asked for evidence to substantiate charge he made in a recent article in a Church if English newspaper that Jews were exerting pressure on press and Parliament to embroil Britain with the Reich.
Dr.Inge said he had no direct knowledge of Jewish influence on the press, but said he was informed by a Journalist that when his paper adopted a policy possibly productive of Anglo German peace, Jewish firms threatened to cancel their advertising contracts.
“Primarily I sympathize with the Jews,” Dr. Inge said, “and there are no words to express my pity and horror at their treatment, but that does not say that they are not exerting pressure on Parliament and the press.” He added that he did not wish to imply approval of Hitler, saying that “no one hates Hitler more than I.”
