The full text has now been made available here of the proceedings before the Alexandria Mixed Court of Appeals in the Cairo action against the president of the Cairo German Club brought on behalf of the Cairo League Against German Anti-Semitism by an Italian Jewish resident here, Umberto Jabes.
Although the court dismissed the appeal on the ground that it has no competence in such an action, much gratification is felt on account of the speech made in court by the prosecutor general, Justice Hugh O. Holmes, K.C., who said:—
“The case of the Jewish race has already lasted twenty centuries, and it can be said now that history has definitely judged it.
“During all this time, this race has been subjected to all kinds of defamation and even more serious ordeals, and it is not by suing before tribunals, but by despising such defamations and confining itself to the efforts of its own members throughout the world, that it has obtained from the only competent tribunal, that of history, a favorable judgment, which cannot be affected by the pamphlet which has led to this case, or by the decision arrived at by a tribunal of three or four Magistrates, no matter how high their authority.”
The court was presided over by Justice Sir C. Van Ackere (Belgian), Vice President of the Mixed Court of Appeal, and composed of Justice Youssouf Bey Zulficar (Egyptian), Justice Messina (Italian), Justice J. S. Blake-### (British) and Justice Scandar Bey Azer (Egyptian).
