The Department of Defense has been asked for an “authoritative statement” explaining why Dr. Walter P. Schreiber, a former Nazi general who was accused of complicity in Nazi medical crimes, is permitted to remain in the United States. The request was addressed to Secretary of Defense Robert A. Lovett by Rep. Jacob K. Javits.
The Congressman told Mr. Lovett that he believed it essential that an authoritative statement be forthcoming from the Department of Defense to explain questions of the ex-Nazi’s status, “a number of which unfortunately go unanswered.” Rep. Javits said he was told in a letter from Brig. Gen. Robert E. L. Eaton, Air Force legislative liaison officer, on March 14, that Dr. Schreiber would leave the country “in a few weeks.”
Recent reports have indicated that Dr. Schreiber is seeking employment in the United States. A spokesman for the Immigration Service said here today that Dr. Schreiber is still in the “custody” of Air Force authorities. The word “custody” was defined as legal responsibility for Dr. Schreiber and not confinement. Immigration officials have not entered the case since they have been informed that the army is making arrangements for Dr. Schreiber, it is said.
