Denial of the rights of the rights of minorities in many parts of the United States threatens “democratic security for us all,” former Governor Herbert H. Lehman declared today in as address at the commencement exercises of Hobart and William Smith Colleges here.

“Many minority groups still suffer discrimination because of their religion or national origin,” he said, adding that “the strength of democracy will always rest upon a guarantee of the civil and religious liberties of the individual. We give aid and comfort to the enemies of democracy when we encourage ill-ill or misunderstanding among the members of the different faiths and races who must cooperate, if civilization is to be preserved. “
