Reports abroad that immigration into Israel was being reduced either with official or unofficial sanction of the authorities brought a sharp denial today from the Jewish Agency immigration department. The falling off of immigration during August and September was described as “seasonal” and is due to new technical procedures in Rumania which reduced by one-half the normal transfer of 4,000 monthly from that country.
About 7,000 immigrants arrived in Israel in August with about 8,000 scheduled for September, as compared with 15,000 monthly before. There has been no change in the Rumanian Government’s policy on emigration to Israel, it was pointed out, but in recent weeks the procedure of notifying prospective emigrants only a few days in advance of their scheduled departure forced many to delay their sailing. It was predicted that immigration would pick up within the next few months, especially from Iran. Two planes now bring in about 200 immigrants daily from that country. This service will be increased.
