The support of the Department of Labor for the Stratton Bill to admit 400,000 displaced persons to the United States within four years was re-emphasized last night by Assistant Secretary of Labor John W. Gibson at a dinner of the Jewish Labor Committee here.

“This country has an obligation to demonstrate its moral leadership by assuming its share of the responsibility for harboring these unfortunate people,” Gibson said. He rejected the arguments that immigration would threaten American living standards, declaring that, on the contrary, it adds to the national wealth.

Gibson told the gathering that, in addition to the Department’s advocacy of fair employment legislation, “the Department has acted quickly and decisively, whenever a question of discrimination has been raised in connection with any of its operations and it has, to my knowledge, always acted against discrimination.” He lauded the Jewish Labor Committee for advancing the cause of democracy at home and abroad.
