Amendment of the immigration laws to eliminate “brutal” separation of members of families through the operation of “obscure technicalities” is advocated by Representative Samuel Dickstein.
Speaking at a dinner to Generoso Pope, publisher of II Progresso, Italian daily newspaper, Mr. Dickstein said Congress was to blame for a deplorable situation in which the reunion of aged parents with their children was prohibited and similar hardships wrought.
He said the literary test ought to be relaxed so that deserving persons who wanted to come to the United States would not find the gates barred to them.
The dinner, given by Judge Nathan Sweedler, was held at the Hotel St. George, Brooklyn. A committee was formed to start work immediately looking to humanization of the laws. Representative Emanuel Celler also attended.
