Dr. Chaim Weizmann paid a surprise visit to the American Zionist Conference yesterday at its closing session and announced that in the very near future Dr. Albert Einstein will consent to head the Institute of Physics at the Hebrew University in Palestine.

Dr. Weizmann was asked to reply to a statement which Dr. Einstein made to the correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency in Belgium two days ago, but he refused to comment on it.

Dr. Einstein had stated: “Dr. Weizmann knows very well that with his declaration in New York last week he misled public opinion. He knows only too well the reasons for my negative attitude and has frequently recognized its justification in private. He also knows under which circumstances I would be prepared to work for the university in Palestine.”

The statement by Dr. Einstein came after Dr. Weizmann had made a speech in New York last week, in which he stated that Dr. Einstein had recently criticized the university, but believed that the noted scientist would shortly go there. “There is his place,” Dr. Weizmann had exclaimed. “He would cease to be a wanderer throughout the universities of the world.”

Yesterday in this city Dr. Weizmann proved that the misunderstanding between him and Dr. Einstein was smoothed over when he made the following announcement:

“It gives me great pleasure as president of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem to announce that Professor Albert Einstein has agreed to give the university his active cooperation in the administration and direction of the Physics Institute there. In accordance with the view of the plans already adopted by the board of governors and in accordance with the view of Professor Einstein, there will be certain reforms introduced in the university which will strengthen the structure. Proposals to that effect will be made to the next meeting of the Board of Governors which will be held in Zurich beginning in August.”
