“As a people we knew how to survive in bad times, but we have not yet learned to survive in good times,” Dr. Nahum Goldmann declared here last night, addressing a dinner of the British Zionist Federation, given in his honor.
The challenge that faces the Jewish people now is how to remain Jewish, the world Zionist leader said. In the olden days, he declared, this issue did not arise. There had been other dangers and tribulations but the Jewishness of the next generation was always taken for granted and assured. This challenge could only be met by an educational effort all over the Diaspora.
Dr. Goldmann noted that the Jewish schools of the British Zionist Federation were an example to other Jewish communities in the Anglo-Saxon countries, particularly where Jewish schools are not yet taken for granted. There was no reason, the Zionist leader said, why Jewish children should not learn Hebrew as well as the language of their own country. Without Hebrew, all talk about the partnership of Israel and the Diaspora becomes meaningless,” he declared.
