More than 400 religious and lay leaders of Greater New York synagogues today heard Israeli Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Halevi Herzog urge them to “throw your spiritual strength into the balance” and rally their congregations to increased support for the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York. Dr. Herzog spoke at a Manhattan Center Rally.
“We dare not close the gates of Israel to immigration,” Rabbi Herzog warned “That is something only Bevin would do. It would reflect shame on the name of Israel,” he said, adding, however, that without increased support, the Jewish state could “never accomplish its goal of providing a home for Jewish refugees throughout the world.”
Delegates attending the 13th annual convention of the Yeshiva University Synagogue Council adopted resolutions pledging wholehearted cooperation to the people of Israel, lauding President Truman’s “liberal ideals” as an “inspiration for all people seeking justice in the world,” and urging American Jewry to “devote its concerted efforts in the support of American institutions of Jewish learning.” More than 1,200 synagogues throughout the U.S. are affiliated with the Council.
