Funeral services were held here today for Dr. Joseph J. Bunim, clinical director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases in Bethesda. Dr. Bunim died of a heart attack at the Institute yesterday at the age of 58. The Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health of the United States Public Health Service
Dr. Bunim was noted for his contributions in the field of rheumatic diseases. He was a pioneer in the use of penicillin in treating rheumatic fever. He had also been active in early test work on new anti-arthritic drugs introduced in 1954. A 1918 graduate of the Rabbi Joseph Jacob School in New York, he received his M.D. at New York University Medical School. He served as associate professor of medicine and chief of the arthritic clinic at the NYU school and as associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University.
A former president of the American Rheumatism Association, he was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of various other medical societies. He was born in Russia, and brought to the United States at the age of four.
