Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, the famous Jewish scientist, and the physicist who headed the American development of the atomic bomb during World War II, was voted this week by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission as the recipient this year of its Enrico Fermi Award. The award consists of a prize of $50,000, a gold medal and a special citation.
Just 10 years ago, Dr. Oppenheimer was declared a “security risk” by the same government agency. He has been the director of the Institute for Advanced Science, at Princton, N.J.; since 1948.
