Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the World Zionist Organization, was the guest at a reception last night at the Hotel Astory, by the Hadassah, the woman’s Zionist organization Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, Executive Secretary of the Jewish Societies, and Mrs. Edward Jacobs, Acting Chairman of the National Board of Hadassah, welcomed him in addresses.
Dr. Weizmann pointed to the importance of Hadassah as a factor for peace and understanding between the population of Palestine. A hospital in Palestine is a much better diplomatic means of bringing Jew and Arab together than all diplomatic papers. The Zionist leader told of his meeting with the first Medical Unity of Hadassah in 1918. He hoped the Jewish women of America would make it possible for Hadassah’s activities to continue.
In the course of his address, Dr. Weizmann predicted that the Jews of the world would have to continue to bear the burden of Palestine upbuilding for another ten years. The burden, he said, must be borne by all Jews, announcing that ais efforts in bringing together the representatives of the various classes of American Jewry upon the platform of the Jewish Agency were successful.
Dr. Arthur Ruppin, member of the Zionist Executive and leading economic expert, told of the first nursing sisters sent by Hadassah to Palestine before the war. He praised the samitation work of Hadassah, showing how its hospitals and doctors were combatting successfully the inroads of malaria and tracoma.
Miss Elizabeth Gutman of Baltimore gave a rendering of Yiddish folk-songs.
