A drastic law, barring all aliens in the country from various professions and trades, is now before the Turkish parliament. If passed, the bill will affect a large number of Jews resident in the country.
The professions, which would be closed to foreigners, according to the proposed law, include medicine, journalism, and stock brokerage. Foreigners would be excluded from professional sports, would not be permitted to be bootblacks, porters, bakers or tourist guides, nor would they be permitted to trade in monopolized goods such as sugar, oil, salt, alcohol, and tobacco.
