Dutch Minister of Defense Willem Frederik van Eekelen has canceled his visit to Israel, apparently in protest of Israel’s handling of Palestinian unrest in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.
He was to have met in the near future with his Israeli counterpart, Yitzhak Rabin.
Meanwhile, Premier Ruud Lubbers has not decided whether to call off his visit to Israel, scheduled for May, according to Foreign Minister Hans van den Broek. In Rotterdam on Saturday, about 1,500 demonstrators organized by the Committee of Moroccan Workers in the Netherlands demanded that Lubbers cancel the visit.
