Reviewing the situation of the Jews in French North Africa today, Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons that he hoped that the recent measures easing the anti-Jewish restrictions there will soon be followed by the removal of other disabilities. Eden admitted, however, that “he was not satisfied that the Jews are yet in a position to exercise their newly restored rights.”

Lord Winterton, Conservative M.P., former chairman of the Inter-Governmental Committee for Refugees, urged that the British Government make strong representations to the local American authorities in North Africa in case all of the restrictions on Jews have not been removed. Replying to Winterton, Eden reaffirmed that all the restrictions have not yet been lifted but added that he “would like to see their total removal.”
